THE GRAPE: Misión

THE PLACE: Tecate, Mexico

THE TASTE: Hibiscus / Red Pepper / Smoky

THE WINEMAKER: Bichi, meaning "naked" in parts of northern Mexico is helmed by brothers Noel & Jair Tellez and aided by Burgundy/Chilean winemaker Louis-Antoine Luyt. The group is bringing well-deserved attention to Mexican wines. Mexico has actually been making wine for centuries, starting with the Spanish colonization of the region in the early 1500s. Bichi is tapping back into this ancient practice. Their grapes are grown at 2,400ft elevation in sandy loam and granite soil in the mountains of Tecate, Mexico right on the U.S. border. Though their winemaking is less than 10 years old it is getting better and better with each vintage. Bichi is a wine label to watch.
