L'eau Epicée "Oregon Orange Sparkling"
Maloof, L'eau Epicée, 2021
The Wine: L'eau Epicée translates as "spicy water," and if that isn't the best name for sparkling wine we have ever heard...this experimental sparkling is made from a very unique winemaking process. It is not quite a pet-nat, but has those soft pet-nat bubbles. The smell has that slight vanilla/almond wonder we associate with great sparkling wine, and as it opens, turns more floral to hibiscus flower. The Gewürztraminer was fermented on the skins and is what lends its slight color to the wine, making this a very light orange wine.
The Winemaker: Ross and Bee Maloof are a super fun winemaking couple known for their unique blends and experimental approach. Bee is a former engineer in the aerospace industry and is the scientific mind behind the vineyard. Ross is a former restaurant sommelier extraordinaire, and together they are the perfect yin and yang to Maloof Farms. They have been making wine since 2015 and it keeps getting better and better.
The Place: Willamette Valley, Oregon
The Grape: Riesling / Gewürztraminer
