La Maliosa, Saturnia Bianco, 2019

The Wine: Saturnia Bianco is Tuscan sun wine - gold in color, elegant in taste, with the Italian tannins of our dreams. This is a 50/50 blend of Procanico and Trebbiano grapes. Trebbiano is the grape used to make balsamic vinegar as well, and lends the slightly acidic smell and taste to the wine. Both varietals sit on the skins for 4 weeks, giving this orange wine not only its sun-drenched color, but its complex, heavier notes. It is then aged 5-6 months in neutral wood. It's very aromatic with smells of dried apricot and ginger and a highly tannic, more mineral taste. An excellent food wine. This year's vintage came out smoother than 2018's, and is delicious as always.

The Winemaker: Tuscan women winemaker Antonella Manuli is a badass. Obsessed with the health of her volcanic soil, she creates wines that are approachable yet interesting, all while healing her land. She teamed up with renowned Italian natural winemaker Lorenzo Corino from Piedmont to develop the Corino Method, a detailed approach to soil health and regenerative farming that they hope to spread throughout Italy. She also makes award-winning olive oil. She was one of the earliest natural winemakers we met, and we are honored to include her Saturnia Bianco in this tasting. We hope you enjoy it as much as we do!
